We are delighted to be offering the lifetime collection of one of the region’s most prominent model railway enthusiasts - the late Kenneth "Mike" Abbott. His collection is made up of locomotives by many leading model train companies, including Accucraft, Bachmann, Aster, Locomotive Works and many others. With over 70 locomotives, passenger coaches, wagons and accessories of mostly gauge 1 / Garden Scale; his 3 miniature locomotives which run on 7.25 inch gauge track and another for 5.5 inch track; plus his 00 Scale collection which includes over 150 locomotives; the scope of this collection rarely comes to auction.
He was a celebrated member of the Leicester Model Railway Group and exhibited and ran his locomotives around the country. As a result, the majority come in handmade wooden cases for transportation and protection. When not touring, Mike's collection circled an impressive garden route that weaved between trees and plants, even going over his garden pond.
All lots are offered without reserve, with proceeds from this auction going towards the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway. Built in 1903 to link farming communities with the market town of Welshpool, it was a line that became freight-only after 1931 before closing in 1956. In 1963, a group of enthusiasts rallied round and began to progressively re-open the line, and today it is a celebrated attraction. The 2 foot 6-inch narrow gauge steam railway negotiates a viaduct and river bridge, climbs the notoriously steep Golfa Bank and steams serenely through the Welsh countryside. The morning session will include both kit-built and pre-built models, passenger coaches, wagons, track and parts. We have a good number is models by Aster, including The Royal Scotsman and other iconic locomotives from the steam era. We also have excellent engineered models by Roundhouse and Accucraft, Bachmann and Tower. The collection also includes a good selection of Garden Railways by LBG, including electric diesel locomotives, steam locomotives, freight wagons, observation coaches and more.
The afternoon session will be dedicated to Mike's large collection of OO gauge model railways. We have steam engines, diesel engines and passenger coaches. Many are DCC fitted and appear mostly unused and come in original boxes. Makers include Hornby, Bachmann, Mainline and others.
These locomotives have been well looked after and would make a great addition to a railway layout, or you could pick up some engines to start off a collection.
