A pair of Spode printware plates, early 19th Century, floral decoration, both with a printed inscription to the underside, THIS BLUE-WARE is printed from the CALX of British COBALT produced from Wheal Sparnon Mine in the County of Cornwall, August 1816, (chip and hairline crack), diameter 25cms. Footnote: The mine referred to was discovered to yield cobalt in 1807, the ore was used by Staffordshire potters during the Napoleonic Wars, when imported materials were in short supply. £80-120 £65
