141 Erika Chevalier, 'The Sacred Heart Messenger' an etched glass panel, 1988, the clear glass pane etched to both sides with figure of Christ entwined with Celtic motifs, with stained coloured highlights, in gilt frame, 50cm square In 1985, at only nineteen years of age, Erika Katherine Mary Chevalier was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and given a life expectancy of just two years. Whilst visiting Lourdes in Southern France, severely paralysed by her condition, she saw the glass interpretation of the Ascension into Heaven in the Underground Basilica, and became inspired to explore the medium of glass as an art form. On her return to Leicester, she studied art glass at the Leicester Polytechnic (now DMU), and gained a scholarship to the Pilchuck Glass School, Seattle. Her Celtic routes often became incorporated in her works, as seen here. After 25 years of battling her condition, Erika passed away in 2010. £100-150
