Participating in our auctions requires registration and selecting a bidding method that suits you. Here’s how to get started and join the action:
Register for Bidding
- In Person: Create a Client Account at Registration/Reception upon arrival at our saleroom. You’ll receive a bidding paddle with a unique number for that auction. For first-time registrations, please bring proof of ID with your address (e.g., a driving licence). FAQ on ID proof and why it’s needed.
- Online: Register through your Gildings account. First-time registrants will need to verify their account via an email link. You’ll also need to link a bank card for identification purposes; this card does not need to be used for payment. Please allow time for verification. More information on accepted forms of ID.
Bidding Options
- Live Online Bidding: Bid directly through your Gildings account. About 30 minutes before the auction begins, a 'Bid Live' button will appear on the Upcoming Auctions page. Click it to join the auction and follow the bidding live. There’s no surcharge for using this service. Alternatively, you can bid through the-saleroom.com, which incurs a 5.94% fee on the final hammer price.
- During the Auction: Familiarise yourself with the bidding display, listen to the auctioneer, and click 'Bid' when your desired lot is up. If you are outbid, you can increase your bid incrementally. For a comprehensive guide on live online bidding, including step-by-step instructions and tips, please visit our Bid Live Guide.
- Bid in Person: Attend the auction, watch the action, and raise your paddle to place a bid. The auctioneer will acknowledge and record your bid in real-time.
- Absentee Bidding: Submit your maximum bid before the auction through email, an online form, or in person. The auctioneer will bid on your behalf up to your specified amount, ensuring the best possible price. Submit absentee bids at least one hour before the auction begins.
- Telephone Bidding: Request a telephone line in advance for any lot valued at £200 or more, or if you’re willing to start bidding at £200. A team member will call you from the saleroom and place bids on your behalf during the live auction.
Important to Remember
A Buyer’s Premium of 28.8% (including VAT) is added to the final hammer price, with a minimum fee of £8. Details on all fees can be found here.
For items subject to VAT or Artist’s Resale Right (ARR), the catalogue will clearly indicate these charges.
If bidding online, ensure you are signed in and registered for the auction before the 'Bid Live' button appears, approximately 30 minutes before the auction starts.
Whether you join us in person or online, our goal is to make the process as smooth as possible. If you have any questions, our team is ready to assist at 01858 410414.
